MINUTES:    A motion was made by Erin and seconded by Richard to accept the minutes of the September 14, 2010 meeting.
The Recreation Committee minutes for September 14, 2010 were accepted as written.

DIRECTOR’S REPORT:      Denise updated the Committee on the Skateboard Park, Dog Park and On-Line Registration. The Skateboard Park meeting scheduled for tonight (October 12th)  was cancelled. Other than the original amount assigned by Denise ($50,000), the Skateboard Park is not listed as a capital expenditure using Recreation revolving dollars, it is listed as a general funds project for the town instead. Denise is still trying to determine the interest level for the Dog Park and is looking forward to attending an Open Space Committee meeting regarding the Dog Park. On-Line Registration is probably going to be in place for the May registration for summer activities. The Recreation Committee still feels there are going to be many problems with this type of registration.

                       Programs:
Before/After School Programs
We currently have 230 children enrolled in the Before/After School Programs being held in the three elementary schools:
Davis Hill – 51 in the morning and 39 in the afternoon
Mayo -  24 in the morning and 40 in the afternoon
Dawson – 39 in the morning and 37 in the afternoon
The staff schedules have been changing. Some of the high school students are leaving for one reason or another. Sue asked how old students need to be to work at the program. Denise said 16 years old, but she also needs staff 18 and over to abide by the state rules and regulations.
Ski/Snowboarding Lessons
Lessons are being offered at Ward Hill beginning in January. Cost for lessons, not including rental equipment, is $155.00 for the 5-week session.  Also included is a day pass after completion of the lessons. Rental equipment is available at an additional cost.
New York City Bus Trip
Trip is scheduled for Saturday, December 4, 2010. Registration is on-going. The cost is $57.00 per person. Since we have not sold out the past couple of years, the bus company is having us share a bus this year.
Adult Programs
We had 127 adults participating in the “registered” classes, and an additional 30-35 adults dropping-in to the volleyball and basketball programs each week. The next session of classes begins at the end of this month. Denise commented that these are the highest numbers we’ve had in the adult program and it’s a tribute to the organization of the program and the instructors. Zumba always sells out and our new program KOGA seems to be a hit, as well.

Miscellaneous:
        Family Pool
The family pool needed to have the caulking replaced around the gutter system, which should help to reduce the amount of water loss. The cost to repair this was $4,225.  Both pools have now been covered. We won’t be able to check the water situation until next Spring, but hopefully the major problem has been solved.
        Skateboard Park
There was more discussion regarding the Skateboard Park. The Skateboard Park Committee is still planning to conduct phone/web interviews with the 3 firms who submitted RFP’s. The approximate cost for the design will be $20,000.  The Recreation Committee feels it’s going to be a hard sell to have the Town fund this project, since it’s a large amount of money for a small group of  people, plus being a seasonal activity.  No fund raising is being done at this time.  Sue commented that from the very beginning Denise had talked about fund raising, but the scope of the project became very costly and Dave White had mentioned taking it to a Town meeting for a vote.
        Santa’s Arrival
Santa’s arrival is scheduled for Saturday, December 4th at 5:00 p.m. at the Town
Hall.  We will be doing the candy bags, hot chocolate and popcorn, as usual. The
Committee’s assistance at this annual celebration is much appreciated.

The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 pm.

The next Recreation Committee meeting will be held on November 9, 2010 @ 7:00 p.m.
        at the Starbard Building.
